Some facts about shade coffee:

  • Shade grown coffee gets its name because it is cultivated under the "shading" canopy of native forest trees.
  • Their quality is superior due to the fact that the coffee berries produced under "shade" grow slower and more evenly that than non-shade coffees ("sun-coffee").
  • In sun coffee plantations the coffee plants grow without any protection. As a result, the plants produce more beans but these are usually smaller and with many odd shapes decreasing their quality.
  • Since the shading canopy of shade coffee plantations is composed of native forest trees, they help in the conservation of natural resources by providing habitat to wildlife (including migratory birds as well as endangered species) and protecting fertile soils and water in tropical areas around the world!
